Montel Williams on MS, Empowerment, and Empathy
A conversation about overcoming challenges and inspiring others.
Montel Williams, a familiar face and voice to many, recently delivered a powerful keynote at an event dedicated to supporting those with multiple sclerosis (MS), lupus, and other autoimmune diseases. His presence was not just a star attraction; it was a heartfelt expression of solidarity with those who often feel unheard and unseen.
The Silent Community
Montel opened up about the silent struggles faced by those with MS, stating, "Unfortunately, we're a community that is a silent community." He highlighted the embarrassment many feel about their condition, which can prevent them from sharing their experiences. "How often do you hear a person with MS speak out about what they go through? They don’t."
Owning Your Identity
One of the most resonant messages from Montel was about self-acceptance and empowerment. He declared, "I alone own the definition of who I am with MS." This assertion encourages individuals to take control of their narrative instead of letting societal perceptions define them.
The Progress in Treatment
Reflecting on the advancements in MS treatments, Montel noted that when he was first diagnosed, there were only three medications available. "Now there are over 20 medications. Unfortunately, not any one of them works for everybody," he explained. He urged his audience to be proactive in their healthcare, emphasizing the importance of understanding their illness and being their own best advocate.
A Call for Empathy
In a world that often seems to lack compassion, Montel’s message was clear: we need more empathy. "The only way out of this abyss is to climb out on the shoulders of those who empathize with others who are ill." This call to action resonates deeply, reminding us all of the importance of understanding and supporting those who struggle with health issues.
Continuing the Journey
Even at 70, Montel is not slowing down. He is involved in various initiatives, including a show called Military Makeover, aimed at helping veterans. He’s also working on projects addressing PTSD treatment and other medical initiatives, demonstrating that age is no barrier to making an impact.
This conversation with Montel Williams serves as a reminder of the power of voice, the strength of community, and the importance of empathy in our society. As he poignantly stated, we must strive to be the support beacon that others need.
